Questions about the benefit
- How much is the care benefit?
- PLN 3,287 gross per month (indexed every year from 1 January). The state budget also pays the carer's pension and disability contributions, building entitlement to a future retirement pension.
- Who is entitled to the care benefit?
- Any person who gives up or does not take up employment to care for someone with a certified severe degree of disability or a total inability to work and independent existence. Since 2024, there is no kinship requirement.
- Does it preclude other income?
- The carer cannot perform any gainful work. However, since 2024 the benefit can be combined with the carer's own retirement or disability pension and with maternity allowance. The cared-for person may also simultaneously receive the care allowance (PLN 215.84).
- Does the carer accrue pension entitlement?
- Yes. For the duration of the benefit, the state budget pays pension and disability contributions on the carer's behalf. The carer accrues pensionable service exactly like a full-time employee.
- What did the 2023 Constitutional Tribunal ruling change?
- The Tribunal ruled that restricting the benefit to carers within a specific family circle was unconstitutional. From 1 January 2024 any person providing care is eligible — regardless of kinship.
